How much will it cost?
Registration fee per year will be appx $89/swimmer. This includes insurance for each swimmer, league fee, awards, and swim coach fee. There will be additional fees if you choose to buy a team swimsuit $25-$40 but this is not required.
Who will be eligible to be on the swim team?
Any child who is able to swim the length of the pool (generally 5yrs-18yrs) who lives in the Monarch View Subdivision will be eligible to swim. We need a minimum of 30 swimmers to start a swim team. Due to liability, we currently will not be able to allow any non-residents on the team.
Who will we swim against?
We will be a part of the Suburban Swim League (http://suburbanswimleague.homestead.com) which includes swim teams from Raintree, Lakewood, Windsboro, Oak Tree, Bent Tree, and Winterset subdivisions in Lees Summit. We will have 3 home meets and 3 away meets per summer on Wedesday evenings beginning at 6:00pm and ending anywhere between 9-11pm depending on the size of the visiting team.
How many meets and practices will there be?
There are 6 meets per summer on Wednesday nights beginning early June (3 home and 3 away). Practice will be each weekday morning beginning around 8am and begins as soon as school is out. The entire season lasts appx 8 weeks and ends by mid July. There is also an additional away championship meet between all subdivisions at the end of the year.
What about liability for our subdivision?
The suburban swim league provides insurance to cover any accidents that occur during swim meets. Our current HOA insurance will cover children that live in the subdivision during practice sessions and will not increase the premiums our HOA currently pays.
Are there any start up fees?
We are estimating appx $2000 to buy all the necessary start up items (lane dividers, swim meet software, stopwatches, etc) that are not covered in the $85 yearly registration fees. Starting blocks are not required but may be a future purchase. We will be looking at sponsorships, fundraisers, etc to cover startup costs. If you own a business or know of someone who would like to sponsor our team in exchange for their names on a banner and/or team tshirts let us know. Swim teams are generally run separate from their subdivision's HOA budget and are self supporting through registration fees and concessions during meets.
How often will the Monarch View pool be closed and used solely for swim team purposes?
The pool will be used for practices for swim team from appx 8-10 am weekday mornings for the first 8 weeks of summer. It will also be used for our home swim meets 3 Wednesday evenings per year beginning at 5:00.
What are some of the concerns?
We will have elevated noise and cars in the pool and surrounding areas during our home swim meets. Keep in mind that we only host 3 swim meets then entire year. There is also a concern we will not be able to find enough volunteers to run the program. If you have a child on the team you will be required to work a 2 ½ hour shift at all 6 meets (3 home, 3 away) for your child to be able to participate. We will also need parents to serve on a swim team committee to help manage it throughout the year.
What are some of the benefits?
Swim teams are a great benefit for a subdivision in that it provides opportunities for friendships between kids and adults in the neighborhood and brings families together for fun evenings. It sometimes can even draw potential home buyers into the neighborhood who are excited that we provide this amenity. It provides great exercise for kids and a chance to perfect their swimming skills. And it's all so conveniently located—right in your own neighborhood, no driving across town to practice!
