Fun to the Max!
The Monarch View Fall Fun Fest on Sunday, October 19th was
a great success. Just ask the approximately 300 kids, parents,
and neighbors who attended! The event began with a Fishing
Derby. Teams lined the ponds convinced they had just the
right spot. Bob Smith, our winning angler, caught the most
fish (2) and the longest fish (22”). Skylar Brennan caught
the smallest fish (14”) – just the right size for a 4 year
old.
The games and other events started
right after the Fishing Derby. Carnival games, ring toss
for a 2 liter of soda, a football touch down throw, and putter
golf were all lined up in the street. Baggo, a game in which
bean bags are thrown to go directly in a hole proved to be
harder than it looked for both adults and kids. If you didn’t
throw a hole-in-one then the bean bag just slid off! Also
set up in the street was a pair of face painting artists.
They could do it all, from Halloween creatures like pumpkins,
skeletons, and green monsters, to kinder, gentler creatures
like unicorns, teddy bears, and giraffes. Be sure to check
out the photos to see their magic. A balloon artist was also
there. As colorful as his balloon creations, he created swans,
rabbits, bears, and other critters. Each balloon seemed to
come with its own story, too. The Lee’s Summit Fire Department
had a fire truck and ambulance on display. Kids of all ages
flocked to them to check out the equipment and put in an
application for future (when they grow up) employment. As
the trucks left they sounded the siren. Kids were convinced
that if they got to turn the siren on then they wanted to
be a fireman.
The hayride to the pumpkin patch
was popular throughout the afternoon. The first trip took
a little bit longer than normal but it was a beautiful fall
day for a ride! At the pumpkin patch you could find just
the right pumpkin to bring back and decorate. The crafting
table was busy with young artists who drew and pasted simple
pumpkins into one-of-a-kind art. The pool parking lot was
also the home of the moonwalk although, there was more high
energy jumping happening there than walking. The cake walk
event was happening to the tunes of Ghostbusters and YMCA.
A table of sweet treats was quickly emptied by various winners.
Some cakes and cupcakes may have made it home, but lots of
other prizes where consumed right away.
Several guessing competitions
were also on display. How many pieces of candy corn did it
take to fill a square container? 1,050 was the actual count.
How much did the “bad boy” big pumpkin weigh? 98 lbs. Bradley
McCarthur was the winner. Mom and dad were glad he didn’t
win the pumpkin too. Creatively carved pumpkins were on display
and competing for votes. The “Charlie Brown” pumpkin (carved
by Jeremy Flowers) took first. Jennifer Viscomi’ pumpkin
design took second place.
Towards then end of the games the
grills were fired up. Hot dogs and chili dogs, hamburgers,
chips, cookies, and pumpkin pie were on the menu. We had
such good attendance that everything was eaten! The event
finished up with a Monarch View premier big screen movie
– It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Little ones were
lined up with blankets and sleeping bags. Finally, it was
dark enough to show the movie but the Great Pumpkin still
didn’t show up in the end. Maybe next year.
This event would
not have been such a success without the help of many, many
volunteers. Thank you, thank you, thank you! A special thanks
to our Activities Director, Jeremy Flowers (and Becky!),
for planning, organizing, and pulling it all off. If you
and your family enjoyed this event be sure to let the board
know. Just email them through this web site. We’ll all look
forward to next year.
